April 14 - 17
This week in science we began our investigation into Earth Systems. We explored the four systems of Earth - the lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and atmosphere, through an in school experience with Teacher's Pet. Engaging in four different centres in a two hour period, we learned a lot about each of these systems and how they are interconnected. A big thank you to the parent volunteers that joined us and made this experience so successful. An additional thank you to our Parent Association for covering the cost of this experience for all students to enjoy.
In examining the four spheres of Earth, students quickly recognized how interconnected they were. The atmosphere and hydrosphere work to support all life (biosphere) on Earth. The lithosphere (crust and mantle of the Earth) provide minerals and soil for plants and animals to live and move upon. Students created a three dimensional model of these systems and will soon bring them home. Ask your students to explain what each aspect of the model represents.
Some of the learning outcomes from our science curriculum include:
Earth scientists call Earth’s systems the spheres, including the
- lithosphere
- atmosphere
- hydrosphere
- biosphere
As we continue our work in this unit, students will examine in greater detail the relationship between these spheres as well as the reciprical impact between humans and the Earth.
